Good afternoon Alcott School Community,
We had a great Spirit Week and I enjoyed dressing up and seeing the spirit back at Alcott. Pictures and celebrations can be seen on our website (via links to my social media: Instagram and Twitter.
This month we are working on a new character trait: Resilience
- I am interested in observing how our students discuss this valuable trait. Timing is perfect as we transition back to school. I will be asking students to tell me what Resiliency means to them.
- This week I introduced a new tradition here at Alcott which I have labeled, "The passing of the KUDO Quarter". It is our way to acknowledge the contributions of this amazing staff. KUDOS to our first 6 recipients of the “Kudo Quarter”.
- Ms. Hemingway, Ms. Read, Ms. Murphy, Ms. Scardino, Mr. Austria, Ms. Gonzalez.
- They will possess the kudo quarter necklace for the month of May and pass it on at the June Staff meeting to other colleagues.
- You will hear more about the Theory of the Dipper and the Bucket at my next parent meeting.
- SAGE Garden Project is a grant that we have been discussing at SSC and PTA as a way to bring authentic learning opportunities to our students. We were approached early in the year as a Clairemont Cluster and our goal is to stand out as schools that are focused on innovative and creative ways to engage students in real life learning and exploration. We have passed the 2nd stage in the process that included an interview with me and members of the PTA and now we are waiting to see if we are selected for this $15,000 award. If selected, students will have access to gardening (new flower beds), guest teachers (Master Gardeners) who will provide up to 60 lessons taught by a garden and nutrition educator. Students will have access to planting, maintaining/upkeep, math, ELA, and science connections, as well as meal preparation (learning the farm to fork concepts). I will be discussing how to include our Infant/toddler/preschool students in this wonderful learning opportunity. More to come!
COVID-19 STUDENT TESTING: Don't forget that this option is available to all our Alcott Students. Our next testing day is Tuesday. If interested follow our previous links to sign up or call our office for details.

May is
Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s vital school staff and administrators recognize potential mental health issues in students #youarenotalone #breakthestigma #hopeforchange
-
-
One in five children ages 13-18 have or will have a serious mental illness.
-
50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14.

90% of those who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness.
-
In 2017, suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death among people ages 10 to 34. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
