Many of Alcott's parents and community members, including local college students, volunteer as tutors. Alcott Elementary receives help from tutors and student teachers from the University of San Diego (USD) and Clairemont High School. Students receive additional help each week from Everyone a Reader and Reading is Fundamentaltutors.

Everyone a Reader Volunteer Tutor Program
Developed by the San Diego County Office of Education, this program assists children experiencing difficulty in learning to read. Volunteers receive three hours of training in Reading Recovery strategies and are asked to volunteer one day a week for one hour. Each tutor is matched with four students reading below grade level. Each of the four students receives a 15 minute one-on-one tutoring session with the volunteer. For more information, call (800) 711-READ or visit the Everyone a Reader Volunteer Tutor Program.
